Bridgestone Guide - Top 100 Places to Eat 2012

Jacks' is on the edge of the Atlantic, but feels like the centre of the world.

Sunday Lunchtime, you head off to Jacks' in Cromane for a quiet lunch and when you get there Brian & Grainne Kearys places is mobbed with cars, mobbed with customers. Mobbed. Don't be surprised: when you ally the georgous beachside location of Jacks' with stunning art deco style interior and rock solid cooking, then being mobbed with customers is a racing certainty.

'I would come back here in a heartbeat writes Valerie O'Connor. 'Its a spectacular setting for any meal.

Well who wouldn't return to enjoy seafood of this quality - crisped Cromane oysters with pickled lettuce: Oven roasted hake with wild mushroom risotto: Cod with champ and a tomato and saffron sauce: Parmesan and herb crusted Plaice: Jacks' shellfish paella: Crispy skinned salmon with creamed leeks. There are non fish dishes available, classics such as char-grilled sirloin with shallots and field mushrooms or confit duck leg with udon noodles.

But when you are this close to the sea on the spit of land between Killorglin & Glenbeigh, seafood should be the first thing on your mind. Be sure to get there early.

Senior Times

.... It is rather like sitting on the edge of the world and eating fish so fresh that it almost swims up on to your plate! Not, however, before head chef Jonathan Keary works his magic with light hand and inspired touches......We began with a pre-starter of crabmeat infused with citrus flavours which tasted like the freshest crab I have ever come across. We went on to have a Dingle Bay Prawn Salad and a Tempura of Tiger Prawns with Zucchini Salad respectively. We were certainly in a fishy mood and our starters had us on a real high. I went on to have a delectable Black Sole on the Bone and the Beurre Blanc was served on the side which I love, as it gives the freedom to have it as you wish and the fish is not drowned in sauce. Nessa pondered the Char-gilled Sirloin and the Barded Breast of Duck, but settled on the Rack of Kerry Lamb. Now we had Rack of Lamb in a very prestigious restaurant in Dublin the week before and honestly it did not come near what we had at Jack's, it was succulent, delicately pink and full of gorgeous flavour. When you come across a gem like Jack's, it makes you realise that we really do have a food culture to be proud of.

…..a superb range of seafood including, when available, hake, black sole, prawns, lobster, plaice on the bone, turbot, and scallops, although the ubiquitous tiger prawn finds its way in, even here, in a speciality tempura dish, served with a zucchini salad and sweet chilli sauce. The cooking is really excellent and everything beautifully presented, with generous servings of lovely fresh vegetables, and irresistible puddings - vanilla crème brulée with almond biscotti comes highly recommended. A well chosen wine list complements the food, and staff are pleasant and knowledgeable. This restaurant is a great asset to the area and its well worth building a visit into your plans

Thank you so much for making a very special day even more special. Everyone had a wonderful time – including us – and that is down to the relaxed but professional attention they received from all of you.

We have so many lovely memories to cherish and they have the backdrop of not having a seconds’ concern throughout the evening because we knew that everything and everyone was so well looked after. Having an intimate and fun party was our chief aim – you made it happen for us. Thank you all very very much.

Jeanne & Shane, April 2011

Seeing as this is our favourite restaurant, we decided to book it for our wedding. We wanted to guarantee a great meal for our guests so Jacks' was the obvious choice for us.

Its superb location and magnificent scenery were a very welcome bonus for us and our guests also. We were so blessed with the weather on the day that we had our drinks reception outside, looking out over the ocean and mountains. This was suggested by Brian.

In dealing with Brian, all we can say is he is the wedding planner extraordinaire! He was always so helpful with suggestions, hugely attentive to detail and generous in many ways with his time and service. He always went the extra mile, for example by ordering in petals matching the bridesmaid’s dresses for the tables and has always treated us in such a way that we felt that we were the only couple ever to have our reception in Jacks'!

On the day, the food was nothing short of spectacular, the service impeccable as always and it was the perfect venue for our after party. Our guests haven’t stopped raving about so many aspects of the day, from JP's piano music throughout the meal, to the service they received from Brian and his staff and the fabulous location of this venue.

We always said that we wanted a wedding with a difference and we certainly got over and above all of our expectations with Jack’s. I would recommend any future bride and groom to visit this location as a definite contender for their reception.

…..The meal was beautifully prepared from starters to coffees. The service was impeccable, none of our guests were left waiting for their food…. t was one of the best decisions we've made having our reception at Jacks. …

To say it was the best day of our life wouldn't do the day justice. As a venue for a wedding reception Jacks is perfect, the huge windows provide a views of the incredible coastline of Kerry...…..The ambience created by coming into the traditional front bar and going through to the cosmopolitan restaurant added another dimension to our day. It gave our guests the option of changing venues within a venue and a change is as good as a rest.

When the end of the night finally arrived Brian and the staff were on hand to organise taxis for our guests, which was much needed…..You always know when you've had a great time, when people are still taking about it months after the event and we still have people coming up to us telling us it was the best wedding they've ever been to.

Marie & Pat, March 2010

What a place; what a venue; what a service we received. It's not only the views that will take your breath away; it's the service, the food & the whole atmosphere.

We had 130 guests, and each one of them RAVED about the Food, the Superb Food & the amazing service on the day. The whole day seemed effortless & was made so intimate and special by our host Brian. He could not do enough for us; from choosing our wines, to helping us choose our 3 course menu, to accommodating our 8 piece Band.

A Fantastic Venue for a wedding.

Geraldine & Paudi, July 2009

A little piece of heaven with the Atlantic ocean as a backdrop.

The guests were awed by the fantastic food & location. The sun shone on this gem of a location making our dream wedding a reality. Brian & the staff were amazing. They made everything possible and nothing was a problem. Sun, food & location – perfection.

Who needs Italy when you can have Jacks? A unique location with top class food. Nowhere comes close.
